Work from Home Moms at the LA Mom Expo

Work From Home LA Mom ExpoI had the pleasure of being on the Work From Home Moms Panel at the LA Mom Expo at Calabasas, CA. In case you were not able to attend the event, I wanted to share with you the answers to my three questions about working from home.

Three Questions for Work From Home Moms

1. I want to start my own business but some of my friends and family think it’s a bad idea. Is it?

If you want to be a work from home mom, having your own business is a great idea! It has many tax benefits and can be a helpful source of income for your household. Friends and family may think it’s a bad idea because they don’t understand the advantages of being an entrepreneur and are more comfortable with the traditional career path that we were all taught…go to school, get good grades, get a job, work hard, retire and live off savings. Despite its popularity, that model is less and less viable. Having your own business gives you more options. A very important factor in the success of your business is that you are clear about why having a business is important to you. Jim Rohn said, “The bigger the why, the easier the how.” When you are clear on your important reasons why, the how will follow.

2. How can I have more balance with my work and family life?

This is a huge question for moms who are juggling so many things simultaneously. Having been a stay at home mom, I am the first to acknowledge that raising kids is a huge responsibility and a 24/7 full time job. Couple that with growing a home-based business, nurturing your relationship with your partner, managing the household, and tending to health, hobbies, and extended family and friends, and things can get overwhelming fast for work from home moms.

My top 3 tips on balance for work from home moms are:

1. Believe – If you believe balance is possible, it will be. If you believe balance is impossible, it will be. It all starts with your beliefs. Cultivate certainty that you are in the perfect flow of life and set intentions for more ease and joy as a parent.

2. Plan – Think ahead and plan proactively. Create schedules, rituals, and boundaries to support your work and play. The more systemized you are, the less thinking you have to do, and the more you can enjoy the present.

3. Focus – Set timers to get things done and give those specific tasks your undivided attention. Limit distractions, especially electronic flashes, buzzes, and tones. Be intentional about experiencing joy in whatever you are doing, whether its writing an article or being a guest at your child’s tea party.

These 3 tips are only a few of the techniques I have for creating more harmony and flow in your life. I am teaching a free teleclass on the Secrets of Life Balance on Wednesday, November 6 at 9am Pacific. You are welcome to listen in and ask questions.

3. I feel guilty when I’m working because I feel like I should be with my kids instead. How do I get rid of this guilt?

Guilt is a low energy emotion, and its purpose is to alert us to when we are out of alignment with what we want. It is a message to us to make an adjustment. Unfortunately, instead of getting the message, releasing the negative, and reconnecting with our intention and what we want, we end up wallowing in the guilt and beating ourselves up. Oh how I am ruining things. I should have done this or that. I should be there and not here. When we wallow in guilt, we are choosing to punish ourselves, believing that feeling bad will help us get what we want. Unfortunately, feeling guilty does not help. It makes things worse, and we end up sabotaging ourselves further.

To become productive at work, it is essential to accept that you feel guilty. Love yourself, love that you feel guilty, totally accept yourself and the part of you that feels bad. From that place of love, you can shift back to your intention. Let love break your hypnotic trance of guilt and bring you back to the present moment. That is when you can make a conscious choice about what you want and why. What do you want at work? What do you want with your family? Get clear on what that is, and go create it. Believe that you have been given the ability when you were given the desire. You can reach your highest goals while raising your kids. Yes, you really can.

I would love for all moms, not just work from home moms, to feel more ease and flow. Whether you are writing a book, returning to work, running the household, raising kids, or all of the above, you can have more harmony in your life.
